Welcome to a New Fiction

I am deciding to maximize my efforts and intentions to write… not only to continue to blog, but also to create stories I’ve been putting off.

I have not so much procrastinated, as not made the time. Maybe that’s the same thing.

This inspiration struck me a year ago. So here we go. Time to write.

(And pardon the screenwriting technique. I learn as I go, and perhaps so can you.)

What follows is a fictional account.

Witch Town, Part 1

(ANIMATED MOVIE)

EXT. CITIES — OLD TIMES IN SEPIA TONE

NARRATOR speaks over montage of city views.

NARRATOR
For a long time the WITCHES of the world lived among HUMANS. They dwelt in the same cities and towns, and offered their services and potions and spells to all.

As the years went on, the humans began change their ways of life, to believe in new things, and they grew more nervous and ever more fearful of the witches.

EXT. WITCH TOWN WOODS — OLD TIMES IN SEPIA TONE

Move through the woods to a clearing to view the construction of a town.

NARRATOR (CONT’D)
So after some debate, the witches decided that it was best to build their own little town, separate from the humans.

In the clearing of a deep, dark wood, on the top of a great hill they built Witch Town.

Which town? Well, the one with the witches, of course.

And in Witch Town the witches continued to mix their brews and cast their spells and craft their potions.

EXT. HUMAN CITIES — OLD TIMES IN SEPIA TONE

Angry and fearful humans gathered in the town square.

NARRATOR (CONT’D)
But the human world continued to grow and expand, and still they grew more fearful of the witches in Witch Town.

HUMAN VOICE 1
What are they doing in there?

HUMAN VOICE 2
Probably plotting to take over the world or something.

EXT. WOODS — OLD TIMES IN SEPIA TONE

Humans marching through the woods with weapons in hand.

NARRATOR (CONT’D)
So the humans banded together and marched to Witch Town to make a preemptive strike. That means they wanted to attack first before the witches might have a chance to do anything.

EXT. WITCH TOWN — OLD TIMES IN SEPIA TONE

Humans attacking Witch Town. Witches and VAMPIRES defending themselves with spells and brooms and magic wands.

NARRATOR (CONT’D)
So the witches had no choice but to defend themselves. And they cast their spells and they fought back and they kept the humans at bay. And their vampire friends lended their fangs and helped ward off the humans.

Witches and vampires win, and the humans run from Witch Town back to the woods.

NARRATOR (CONT’D)
So the witches were triumphant and won the fight. Witch Town was safe and the humans retreated (meaning they ran away.)

But the witches were worried that the humans would come back and in greater numbers. The witches and their witchly friends, the vampires, SKELETONS and TROLLS, only wanted to live a quiet life of witchcraft and haunting. So they toiled and toiled and toiled away until at last their great spell was ready.

EXT. CEREMONIAL GROUNDS WITCH TOWN — OLD TIMES SEPIA TONE

All MONSTERS gather together in the center of town.

NARRATOR (CONT’D)
All the witches of Witch Town, and some powerful vampires, too, came together one day and cast their great spell. The spell hid the world of the witches forever more from the world of humans. Witch Town vanished and all of the witches with it. They lived on happily in their own private world of magic, as if in a bubble, away from all trouble.

SWITCH TO MODERN DAY TRUE COLORS

EXT. AND INT. WITCH TOWN — LATE AFTERNOON

A bird’s eye view reveals witches and skeletons and trolls walking through the streets of Witch Town.

Other scenes portray the interiors of houses and shops, and witches at work.

One witch, ESDA, walks calmly through town, following what pleases her.

Esda laughs as two skeletons bump into each other and knock each other’s bones off.

Esda gazes in awe as an OLD CRONE disciplines her disobedient GRANDDAUGHTER with a spell that makes the baby hiccup and blow bubbles upon each exhale of breath.

Esda gasps in surprise as, with her head turned to the hiccuping baby, she bumps into the large, warty back of a troll.

ESDA
Excuse me.

The troll grunts at Esda and walks away.

EXT. ORANGE, RED AND PURPLE CLOUD-FILLED SKY — LATE AFTERNOON

Esda approaches the end of town and looks to the sky with wonder in her eyes, arms raised overhead.

ESDA
I love being a witch!

EXT. WINDING PATH THROUGH GRASS — TWILIGHT

Esda walks along the path alone, skipping and swinging her arms with delight.

Night closes in as the colors in the sky turn to deep blues and purples.

FROGS and CRICKETS can be heard chirping away.

This is the opening for a new series of Playground stories, where I will develop my script for a kid’s movie. Please continue to follow me as I write. Enjoy!
