Witch Town, Part 2

(ANIMATED MOVIE)

EXT. HEAD WITCH’S CEREMONIAL GROUNDS — EVENING

A troll runs up a hill painted in crimson red light to where the HEAD WITCH is stirring a cauldron.

The cauldron bubbles and fumes smoke, and green and purple sparks flare up across its waters.

HEAD WITCH
A message for me?

TROLL
(grunts)
Uh!

The troll hands the head witch a rolled parchment.

The witch unrolls it and takes a moment to read it, wrinkling her long nose.

HEAD WITCH
Says here the Old Hen Cacklers are coming for a visit.

She tugs at her long, curved chin a moment.

HEAD WITCH (CONT’D)
Wonder what they want this time.

The troll averts his eyes from the head witch, scratches his back and, finding something of interest, eats whatever it is he’s caught under his nail.

HEAD WITCH (CONT’D)
Very well, you may go. Oh…

The witch reaches deep into her black witch’s robe and pulls out some old fish bones.

HEAD WITCH (CONT’D)
(tossing the bones to the troll)
Here you go, for your trouble.

The troll catches the fish bones in his big mouth.

TROLL
(grunts)
Uh!

The bones crunch between his teeth and he grins broadly, fishtails hanging out.

HEAD WITCH
Alright, off you go.

The troll at last leaves her, bounding back down the crimson hill

HEAD WITCH (CONT’D)
(bemused)
Ah, the Old Hen Cacklers. This should be interesting.

Esda approaches the bottom of the hill then.

HEAD WITCH (CONT’D)
My child! What brings you out this way?

Esda climbs the hill and comes to stand by the side of the cauldron, watching the Head Witch stir the pot.

ESDA
Head Witch, what are you brewing up?

HEAD WITCH
Oh this one? This is a potion for my rat. He’s had a sniffle all day. This one will really clear it up, fast.

Esda takes a big whiff of the potion, closing her eyes to take it in.

ESDA
Smells downright rotty, Head Witch.

The Head Witch glares at Esda.

ESDA
I love it!

HEAD WITCH
(smiling)
Of course you do. You’re a proper witch. Like the good, old rotty potions. I was just like you when I was your age.

ESDA
You were?

HEAD WITCH
Yes. I was curious and headstrong, too.

ESDA
Headstrong?

HEAD WITCH
Yes. Stubborn.

ESDA
I’m stubborn?

HEAD WITCH
You certainly can be. That can be put to good use, sometimes. But do be mindful of overusing it…

Esda nods at the Head Witch.

HEAD WITCH (CONT’D)
So, you didn’t walk up here just to ask about my potion, did you?

ESDA
Well, no.
(Beat)
Head Witch… why can’t we leave Witch Town? I mean, I love it here… But, sometimes… sometimes I want to see the world outside. What’s out there?

HEAD WITCH
Nothing and no good!

The Head Witch’s shortness makes Esda jump.

HEAD WITCH (CONT’D)
Look, deary, it’s lovely to imagine what is out there. But believe me, the world outside Witch Town is not a place for little witches like you. Or old crones like myself, either. We witches made Witch Town to escape the dangers of the human world. We’re better off here. It’s the perfect place for a witch to be.

ESDA
But sometimes, I just wish there were more to this all…

HEAD WITCH
Esda, sweetie, do not dwell on these things. These thoughts will bring nothing but trouble, trouble to you. You will not be leaving Witch Town, so you’d best forget the idea.

ESDA
But Head Witch…

HEAD WITCH
(snapping)
Enough!

This time Esda almost startles right off her feet and down the hill, but she lands on her bottom.

She picks herself up and dusts herself off.

Suddenly, a RAT runs out of the Head Witch’s house. It squeaks its way over to run between Esda’s feet. Then it stops short as it has a fit of sneezing.

HEAD WITCH
Come here, Logan.

The rat runs over to the Head Witch and lifts his head to her expectantly.

The Head Witch uses a large ladle to draw a spoonful of the brew out of the cauldron, then grabs a smaller spoon and pours a little into that.

She then administers the small spoon of potion to LOGAN.

HEAD WITCH
That atta do it. Little sniffle potion for you there. More before bed, then all day tomorrow, ok?

The rat sips the potion and nods its head in response to the Head Witch.

HEAD WITCH (CONT’D)
Feel better, little one.

Logan runs back to Esda’s side and rubs his head against her ankle. Esda bends down and pets him.

HEAD WITCH (CONT’D)
As for you, other little one, time to head home for you. I’ve got some things to tidy inside. You’d best be off before it’s too dark and your mommy wonders after you.

Esda nods again and gives another pet to Logan. Then she stands and begins to walk away.

ESDA
(stopping)
Head Witch, have you ever been outside of Witch Town?

The Head Witch raises her eyebrows high, and a slight glimmer of a smile creeps across her face.

HEAD WITCH
I have done many things, most of which I would not recommend for you. But those are tales for another time, deary. Run along home, now. Go on.

The Head Witch raises her arms towards Esda with the “shooing” motion.

Esda, with a disheartened face, turns and walks back the way she’d come from town.

The sun sinks in the distance.

The crimson hill turns a blood red, then a deep purple, then black as the night.
