What follows is a fictional account.

Witch Town, Part 3

(ANIMATED MOVIE)

EXT. WITCH TOWN SQUARE, FOLLOWING MORNING

There is a commotion in the center of town. All the witches are gathered along with a spattering of skeletons and trolls.

The Head Witch (GRISELDA) moves in from one side of the crowd. Her black robes show a finer quality than the other witches, who wear plain robes of black, purple, and green.

Instead of a pointy hat the Head Witch wears a deep black shawl that covers half of her face. Her face is grand and stand-outish. Everything about her speaks of elegance and grace and charm and power.

From the opposite end of the crowd another witch, ESMERELDA, pushes through the towards the middle to meet the Head Witch.

This new witch is almost equal in elegance, pomp and circumstance. But she is the most stand-outish of all, for she does not wear dark colors but instead wears a mother-of-pearl white robe and a starry wand. She is also the tallest, a good head or two taller than almost every other witch there, and her legs are long and graceful as she drifts towards the middle of the crowd.

The two witches meet in the center of town and pause for an inordinate amount of time as the entire town closes in around them in silence and anticipation.

Finally, the taller, white-robed witch speaks.

ESMERELDA
(dryly)
Well?

HEAD WITCH GRISELDA
Well… welcome.

ESMERELDA
Hmph. Just your style to have no style. Whatever. In any case, I assume you got my message?

GRISELDA
Just last night. Loads of advance notice.

ESMERELDA
Messengers can be so slow these days. Especially trolls.

GRISELDA
Not my trolls.

ESMERELDA
Well, Griselda, I have no use for small talk.

GRISELDA
As you say, Esmerelda.

ESMERELDA
So I will get to the point. We of the Old Hen Cacklers school of witchcraft are coming for a visit, if that is ok with you?

GRISELDA
Why does it sound like you’re not really asking for permission?

ESMERELDA
Fact of the matter is, we have an emergency.

Esmeralda fake swoons over her hand for a sense of drama.

GRISELDA
What kind of emergency?

ESMERELDA
Our home, it’s so frightful. Our home has been taken from us!

Esmerelda amplifies to a shout and now practically faints in place.

GRISELDA
(faking concern)
Oh dear. What happened?

ESMERELDA
It was those awful soldiers! The light warriors. They wore shiny, white suits of armor and shining white swords. Scared me and my girls right out of our stockings. They started melting the whole school with their bright light! We picked up our broomsticks and made our escape. There were too many of them. Woe is me!

At this point Esmeralda falls to her hands and knees.

GRISELDA
(with true concern)
Oh dear, indeed.

The Head Witch Griselda pauses and tugs at her chin. She looks around at her fellow witches and townsfolk.

GRISELDA (CONT’D)
Warriors of light? Come for your school? They wouldn’t be coming to Witch Town after you, would they?

ESMERELDA
My dear, Griselda, do you think I am that foolish? We flew away unseen and used our magic to hide our tracks. They do not know where we went. But you should be on guard, double your watch. Who knows what they have planned.

GRISELDA
When are the rest of your cacklers supposed to arrive?

ESMERELDA
Why, any minute.

As if on cue a commotion breaks out as a large crowd of new witches from the Old Hen Cackler’s School of Magic begin streaming into town. There are some competitive looks cast between the Cacklers and the witches of Witch Town.

GRISELDA
(muttering)
Yea.

The Head Witch strides away, regaining her own sense of composure.

GRISELDA (CONT’D)
How come I knew you’d say that. Well, they are here now, aren’t they? Now where did you think I was supposed to house all of you? We are pretty full up as it is these days, you know, Halloween coming and all. Lot of witches coming in out of the country. Not as safe out there as it used to be in the old days. Full up, I say. Houses brimming to the max…

The Head Witch trails off in her ramble as she walks out of the town square.

ESMERELDA
(calling after)
I’m sure you can think of some way to help your sister witches in need!

The Old Hen Cacklers remain in the center of Witch Town, with the local witches looking on.

Everyone is still. No one moves. No one seems sure what to do.
