Witch Town, Part 9

(ANIMATED MOVIE)

INT. HELSING HOUSEHOLD, EVENING

Margaret is lying prone on a large area rug across the hardwood in the dining room. She is busy scribbling and coloring pictures on a pad with crayons.

Todd is in the family room adjacent to the dining room. The TV is on, playing a Halloween special. He is bouncing a super ball off the hardwood floor, with the characteristic rubber sound resounding around the house.

Holly is in the kitchen, which comes off the dining room around the corner from the family room. She is washing dishes with a cloth and placing them in the drying rack with clinking and clanking sounds.

Todd’s ball bounces into the dining room and over Margaret.

MARGARET
Stop it, Todd!

TODD
I didn’t do anything.

MARGARET
You almost hit me with your ball.

TODD
It didn’t hit you.

HOLLY
(offhand)
Hey!

Todd runs after the ball and and scoops it up with both hands. Grinning, he returns to the family room to watch some of the Halloween special.

Meanwhile Margaret continues to scribble away, eyeing her paper intensely and sticking her tongue out to the side in concentration.

Todd is trying to find fun ways to bounce the super ball. He angles it so that it bounces between the top and bottom panels of the coffee table. He laughs and does this several times, making a repetitive dribbling sound.

HOLLY
Todd, did you brush your teeth?

Todd does not respond.

HOLLY
Todd! Go brush your teeth!

TODD
I don’t want to brush my teeth.

Todd still does not make a move towards brushing his teeth. He continues to watch the TV program, standing in place.

Margaret stops for a moment and pushes the drawing pad hard to the floor. She squints at it and crinkles her cheeks. Apparently satisfied, she continues with her work, tongue sticking to the side again.

HOLLY
Todd!

TODD
Ok, ok.

But instead of going straight to the bathroom, Todd decides to throw the super ball down as hard as he can so that it bounces off the floor and then the ceiling and back. When it hits the floor it bounces with great speed towards the dining room. First it almost hits Margaret.

MARGARET
Hey!

Then the super ball bounces again onto the dining room table, off the table and against the wall, then back to the table, and finally crashes into a glass vase in the middle of the table. The vase falls onto its side with a thud, but does not break. The ball then dribbles slowly off the rest of the table and back to the floor.

HOLLY
(coming in to stand the vase back up)
Todd! Careful! I told you not to bounce that ball so hard in the house. You could have broken something. Now go brush your teeth!

TODD
Alright, I’ll go brush my teeth!

HOLLY
Don’t you give me lip young man.

TODD
Why do I have to brush anyways? It’s not important.

HOLLY
You need to clean your teeth so you don’t get any cavities. Do you want the dentist to drill out more cavities in your teeth? Now go brush.

TODD
Fine!

Todd scoops up the super ball once last time and hurls it aimlessly over his shoulder. This time it smacks right into a lamp across the room which knocks over. The lightbulb shatters in a crashing sound.

HOLLY
Todd Albert Helsing! Now look what you’ve done! Just brush your teeth and go straight to bed, young man. I’ve got to clean up this mess. Margaret, don’t go over there. There’s broken glass all over the place.

Holly continues to mutter angrily to herself as she goes to get a broom and dustpan.

Todd, now looking sheepish, walks past Margaret who is looking up at him quizzically from the floor. He peers curiously at her drawings.

The picture is a great big circle, colored blue like water. There are green trees, bushes and grass around the edges. In the middle of the circle is a girl’s face with a witch’s hat on. The witch is reaching her hand out of the circle, waving and smiling.

TODD
Who’s that? Your imaginary friend?

MARGARET
She’s real!

As soon as Margaret blurts this out, she seems to regret it and quickly covers her mouth with her hand.

TODD
You’re weird.

MARGARET
Am not!

HOLLY
Todd! I don’t want to say it again!

TODD
Argh!

Todd finally goes to the bathroom and turns on the sink to brush his teeth.

Margaret looks at her completed work with great pleasure, then scoops up the paper and runs off.
