The Witches Keep Witching
The story continues to unfold while I also learn to screenwrite. Enjoy.
Start from the beginning.
What follows is a fictional account.
Witch Town, Part 8
“
(ANIMATED MOVIE)EXT. WITCH TOWN, AFTERNOON
Esda traipses through Witch Town. She sees a hub bub of activity from all of the witches.
The Old Hen Cacklers are still settling in, making a fuss over everything that is not going their way.
OLD HEN 1
I need more straw for my broom, can’t you see?OLD HEN 2
My room is not dark enough!OLD HEN 3
The frogs here are too fresh for my potions.Esda listens as she passes the witches, but continues to keep her eyes out for the next exciting thing.
There is a spark of magic as one witch’s spell fizzles out in a puff of smoke. The witch coughs and dusts herself off. Onlookers watch with amusement and puzzlement.
One Old Hen Cackler, dressed in fine, clean robes, rounds a corner and bumps into a troll who is quite dirty.
OLD HEN 4
(backing up)
Why, you lug, look what you’ve done. My perfectly neat robes are a mess now. Hmph! The witch storms off, and the troll’s eyes follow after her, looking a bit hurt and shocked.
Esda keeps walking, passing a group of cacklers who seem to be having trouble with their bags and figuring out where they are staying.
ESDA
Can I help you find your room?OLD HEN 5
Why, yes, deary, that would be lovely.Esda picks up a couple of the smaller parcels that she can manage and leads the way. She shows the group of Cacklers down the road to the dining hall in the center of town.
OLD HEN 5
We are staying here?ESDA
It’s the biggest place for everyone to sleep. Let me help you find a spot.INT. WITCH TOWN DINING HALL, AFTERNOON
Esda leads the Cacklers into a crowded banquet hall filled with activity. There are Cacklers all over the room trying to get situated. A handful of local witches are assisting. The occasional skeleton is helping with bags and items.
ESDA
Here you go, this is a nice place for you.OLD HEN 5
It’s just a long dinner table. We are not eating. We need someplace to sleep.ESDA
Yes, ma’am. I’m sure Head Witch will bring you some blankets so you can have a cozy night sleep.OLD HEN 5
Oh, fizzlewand, what can be done about it…. Well, thank you, young witch. The Cackler wiggles her fingers towards Esda and a candied apple appears before her. Esda reaches out and grabs it.
ESDA
Thank you very much.Esda walks away, taking a bite out of her apple and licking her lips.
SKELETON JOE walks into the dining hall loaded with bags on every conceivable part of his bone structure.
SKELETON JOE
Hey Esda.ESDA
Hey Skeleton Joe. Need a hand?Esda helps lighten the skeleton’s load as much as she can, but ends up carrying too much herself and almost topples over.
SKELETON JOE
Where did the Cacklers get the time to pack all of this when they were running from the school?ESDA
Beats me.SKELETON JOE
Well, I hope they get settled in soon. This town just became a little TOO witchy for me, if you know what I mean.ESDA
Are you going back to the Skeleton Mines?SKELETON JOE
Why, no! Didn’t you hear? The Mines got attacked by the light warriors, too. It’s probably only a matter of time before some of those refugees show up here.Esda shakes her head in shock. Skeleton Joe drops his bags on the floor.
SKELETON JOE
Hey, Esda, it’s ok. I’m sure the witches will figure this out. They always figure things out.ESDA
Yea, you’re right.Still, Esda looks concerned. She drops her bags next to Skeleton Joe’s.
ESDA (CONT’D)
Well, bye, Skeleton Joe!SKELETON JOE
See you, Esda.Esda heads back out of the dining hall.
EXT. WITCH TOWN, AFTERNOON
As Esda walks out the front door of the dining hall, she bumps into Esmerelda.
ESMERELDA
Excuse me, young witch. Watch where you’re going.ESDA
Pardon me, ma’am.ESMERELDA
You are quite young, aren’t you?ESDA
I’m nine.ESMERELDA
(muttering)
What I could do with your essence to make a potion of youth and beauty…ESDA
What’s that?ESMERELDA
Nothing, my dear. Just daydreams of an old witch. You’re a pretty little one. What will you do when the warriors of light come to Witch Town? Will you fight or run?ESDA
Honestly, ma’am, I haven’t thought about it. I just know Head Witch and the rest to take care of it.ESMERELDA
Yes, typical child. Always counting on the adults to do everything. Useless. Truly useless.ESDA
I am not…It is too late for Esda to finish her sentence as Esmerelda walks away and enters the dining hall.
Esda is left standing on the steps, face aghast at the comment.
But she bolsters herself up and walks away with her pride.
